Rogal enlisted in the Marines as a teenager, just before war broke out. He fought in the Second Marine Division, never higher than a platoon leader, in the most violent struggles of the campaign. His memoir is unsophisticated, ignores all strategic verities, cares little about higher command--and is irresistible. Well worth reading, one of the best first-person war narratives.
